Book Review: The Postnatal Cookbook

Many people think about the food they eat while they are pregnant but give little thought to what nutrition will look like during the postpartum period. Too often new parents grab whatever is handy or just skip eating all together. Taking care of yourself helps you take care of your new baby! It’s important to … Continue reading Book Review: The Postnatal Cookbook

We’re Not All in the Same Boat

December is often a time when we look back over the year, taking stock if you will, celebrating the joys, mourning the losses. For most, this has been a heck of year to say the least; for others, especially those who have lost loved ones, it has been the worst. There is a saying we've … Continue reading We’re Not All in the Same Boat

The Feeding “Non-Hold” for an Easier Start

During a breast/chest feeding class you’ll likely learn about some common holds like the cross-cradle and the football. A lot of these holds are based on bottle feeding. Once your baby gets a little older and has more head control, the holds may be handy, but in the beginning, they can actually prevent them from … Continue reading The Feeding “Non-Hold” for an Easier Start

Be Kind to Get Kind

When I was young, the saying, “Do as I say, not as I do” was actually a common parenting phrase. That sort of made me mad as a child. It seemed quite unfair that I was being required to behave in a way that my parents or other adults were not. Shouldn’t it have been … Continue reading Be Kind to Get Kind

Temporary Exemption

When 9/11 occurred, our world was completely changed; but we quickly moved to the new "Post 9/11 World." As the pandemic hit (and has continued it's spread), our world has completely changed -- but the shift to a "Post COVID World" has not happened yet (and may not for some time.) I am left with … Continue reading Temporary Exemption

It’s Hard Being a Baby!

It may seem easy to us – who wouldn’t want someone to take care of all their needs, the moment they need something. But if we unpack that a little bit, we realize that being a baby may not be all it’s cracked up to be. Imagine wanting to go into another room, but not … Continue reading It’s Hard Being a Baby!

Book Review – Eating for Pregnancy

There is a lot of focus put on nutrition when you decide you'd like to have a baby. Maybe you're in the planning phase or you just found out you're pregnant, but either way your view point toward the food you eat has likely changed. It can be a bit overwhelming as you think about … Continue reading Book Review – Eating for Pregnancy

Register for “Time”

My son is getting married next year, and he and his fiancé have decided not to register for gifts. They have all the things they need for their apartment and don't want to register for stuff just to have "new things." They have decided instead to "register" for a honeymoon. While there is no expectation … Continue reading Register for “Time”

“Unless I’m at a Birth”

As a independent doula, and like many other birth workers, I am on-call from the moment my clients sign a contract with me. Birth can happen during any week of pregnancy and at any time of day, any day of the week. Because of this, it may seem that I don't really start working until … Continue reading “Unless I’m at a Birth”

I have always been fascinated at the complexity of human emotions and the ability for a person to feel bitter sadness and sweet joy at the same time. There are many times along our journey where we find ourselves at the corner of bitter and sweet. We look back down the road and we feel a sense of sadness as we say goodbye to a part of our lives we will never travel through again, while at the same time feeling joy as we look at the adventure that lies ahead.
#birthispowerful Our mindset toward birth can affect our physical experience. Focusing on what will be positive has a lot of power!
How you feel and how you are treated are as important as the outcome. Even more so given the systemic white supremacy that exists in the healthcare system. #blackbirthmatters
