Parenting Tip – Which Would You Like To Do First?

Just like us, children don’t like feeling powerless. Their reality, however, is that they do not have much power. They don’t get to decide much about their daily schedule, where they live, even who their friends are. This can be very frustrating and can cause more strong-willed children to act out against authority. That authority, … Continue reading Parenting Tip – Which Would You Like To Do First?

Puppies and Babies – Part 3

It's the big day! Time to bring baby home! And time for your dog to meet your little one! What can you do to make the first introduction go smoothly? The most important thing to remember is to be calm. Dogs can sense when you or others are agitated or anxious and they react accordingly. … Continue reading Puppies and Babies – Part 3

Puppies and Babies – Part 2

What are some things you can do in the weeks leading up to bringing baby home that can make the introduction go more smoothly? It's important to remember that dogs handle change in different ways, some better than others. First, know your dog and how he responds to new people and situations. Then take some … Continue reading Puppies and Babies – Part 2

Puppies and Babies – Part 1

Our 4-legged babies are a part of the family. But as much as we may anthropomorphize them, we need to remember that they are animals. The friendliest dog can still be unpredictable in certain situations. I recently attended a workshop about introducing your baby to your dog given by Robin from Fydoland. She gave us … Continue reading Puppies and Babies – Part 1

Parenting Tip – I’m Coming!

Developing trust starts very early with your children. It was very important to me that I respond when my babies would cry. I had learned that I was not spoiling them and my attention was not discouraging them from learning to cope on their own. In fact, it was laying a foundation of trust which … Continue reading Parenting Tip – I’m Coming!

Sleep? Hey I’d Like Some of That

Is sleep really that important? In a word -- YES! Getting a good night's sleep has a lot more benefits than just feeling refreshed in the morning. Sleep allows your body to do some physical healing, maintains hormone levels, and boosts your immune system. Sleep plays a very important part in emotional well-being and improves … Continue reading Sleep? Hey I’d Like Some of That

Parenting Tip – I’m HUNGRY!

This one really bugged me. I realized that it bugged me, because it made me feel like a servant. Like the only reason I’m here is to cater to their every whim. You see, “I’m hungry” is not a question, it is a statement. They were expressing a feeling of want and waiting for someone … Continue reading Parenting Tip – I’m HUNGRY!

Parenting Tip – How Was Your Day?

We pick up our kids from school or they get off the bus and we ask them this question: "How as your day?" And we get our answer: "Good" Then we ask the follow up question: “What’d you do today?” Answer: “Nothing.” These are bad questions. Imagine your day at work (or your partner's). You've … Continue reading Parenting Tip – How Was Your Day?

Parenting Tip – I’m Bored

We have all heard this statement. Heck, we’ve all said this statement. I remember hearing author, John Ortberg give a talk about this very thing, and it had a huge impact on our parenting. When kids say this, a parent’s first response is to begin suggesting things to do. Those things are most often met … Continue reading Parenting Tip – I’m Bored

Parenting Tip – How Are You Feeling?

We are born with emotions. What we are not born with is the language to describe those emotions. Emotions are not “good” or “bad.” They just are. Of course some emotions feel better than others but (if you’ll remember from the movie Inside Out) they are all important to our well-being. From the moment your … Continue reading Parenting Tip – How Are You Feeling?

I have always been fascinated at the complexity of human emotions and the ability for a person to feel bitter sadness and sweet joy at the same time. There are many times along our journey where we find ourselves at the corner of bitter and sweet. We look back down the road and we feel a sense of sadness as we say goodbye to a part of our lives we will never travel through again, while at the same time feeling joy as we look at the adventure that lies ahead.
#birthispowerful Our mindset toward birth can affect our physical experience. Focusing on what will be positive has a lot of power!
How you feel and how you are treated are as important as the outcome. Even more so given the systemic white supremacy that exists in the healthcare system. #blackbirthmatters
