December is often a time when we look back over the year, taking stock if you will, celebrating the joys, mourning the losses. For most, this has been a heck of year to say the least; for others, especially those who have lost loved ones, it has been the worst.
There is a saying we’ve heard often this year:
We’re all in the same boat.
But recently I heard a different phrase which is much more accurate:
We’re all in the same storm.
Some of us may be in a cruise ship with a full staff, all-you-can-eat buffets, and entertainment. Others are in a yacht with a below deck cabin, adequate supplies, and a working radio. Still others are in a small rowboat with no motor, no oar, taking on water.
While we may be in a shared situation
- a storm
- COVID
- 2020
- birth
- parenting
we are certainly not experiencing it the same way, because we are not all in the same boat. Our view of the storm and how we weather it depends a lot on that boat. Those on the cruise ship may hardly feel the waves, while those in the rowboat may feel like they are drowning.
You may have felt that your birth was easy because you were supported, and it went the way you planned; you may feel like your parenting journey is starting off rough and that you won’t make it through.
If you are in the rowboat, call out for help. If you are in the cruise ship, see if there are other boats around you that may need help; throw them a tow line, give them some supplies, or use your radio to call for help.
As we journey forward, we will not all be in the same boat, but we will find ourselves in the same storm and we can all help each other make it through.
Do not hesitate to reach out if you need any help.
