My husband and I recently “concluded” our parenting career as we sent our daughter off to college to join her older brother. We obviously will continue to be their father and mother, but in a very different role. They are adults now and we are friends.

So I find myself in a reflective state of mind most days.

I don’t believe for a minute that we were perfect parents, but when I look at our children, I see two amazing adults that are secure in who they are and have a vision for their place in this world. I believe that this is in part because of several of the choices that we made as we parented them.

I thought I might share some of the ones that I feel were instrumental in their development. So I am embarking on a “Parenting Tip” series of blog posts. This is how we parented our children, so I’m not suggesting this is the only way.

Maybe you’ll read some and think, “That will never work for us” and that’s fine.

But maybe you’ll also read some and think, “This could really help our family.”

Remember that you’re building a foundation. It’s not the flashiest part of the building, but without it the building can’t stand. The more care you give and time you spend on the foundation, the easier it will be to raise the building.

So be on the lookout for my “Parenting Tip” videos, talk about them with other parents in your life, try some of them, discard what doesn’t work, incorporate what does work, and persevere. Parenting is hard; laying the foundation takes time. But as someone who is on the other side, I can say it is worth it in the end!
